Chicken Coop Plan – Things To Consider In The Planning Stage

Before you start building your chicken coop you need to look at several important things first, please take into account where you live as these may vary depending on your location

Council Regulations – Are there any regulations you need to follow and address for keeping chickens and for a chicken coop.

Animal protection laws – Are they any laws relating to keeping chickens and if there are what do you need to do to abide by these laws.

Area – Do you have adequate land for the amount of chickens you want

Climate – Do you need to make special amendments to the coop to suit the local climate

Predators – Do you need to ensure the safety of your chickens from any local native predators that might want to have your chickens for lunch

Free ranging  or enclosed – You need to consider land and predators when you decide on how your chickens will roam. If they are free range you may also need to consider the outer barrier ie backyard fence is it secure from predators.

Type of chickens – You need to look at the breed of chicken and your purpse for keeping chickens

Other things to consider in the plans are

ventilation, flooring, lighting, doorways, position, land drainage, accessibility, water system, cleaning, storage, nesting area, safety from predators.
